Winter Mailbox Tips For Homeowners

The Public Works Department requests that residents make sure that their mailbox conforms to postal standards.  The bottom of the box needs to be 48 inches above the street and the door when closed does not extend beyond the back of the curb.  Avoid hanging paper boxes, planters, or other attachments underneath the mailbox.  After each plowing, clear snow away from the mailbox area.  Snow that remains in front of the mailboxes will get compacted by post office vehicles and cause problems with mail delivery and snow removal operations later in the winter.


Snowplows and Mailboxes
Damage to a mailbox is a risk that snowplow operators face during their winter plowing requirements.  The City will conduct a review of each mailbox damage claim to determine whether the City has any legal responsibility for the damage, and if so, to replace or provide reimbursement for the mailbox.  Mailboxes damaged by snow thrown by the plow will not be replaced or reimbursed.  If the City, in its discretion, determines that reimbursement or replacement is appropriate, then the mailbox owner will be provided options for replacement or reimbursement according to City approved policy.
